Syllabus/ Curriculum

Physics of Music & Acoustics

Module 1: Physics of Sound & Music

  • Vibration & Sound Creation — by Strings, Tabla Skins, Flute Air Columns
  • Frequency (pitch), Wavelength (note length), Amplitude (loudness), Velocity (speed of sound)
  • Beats & Phase — close frequency notes create beats; phase decides harmony or dissonance

Module 2: Physics of Resonance, Harmonics & Timbre

  • Resonance — natural strengthening of sound when vibrations match the instrument’s body or air column
  • Harmonics — extra tones with the main note, giving ragas depth and melody
  • Timbre — the unique sound quality or “color” that makes each instrument or voice distinct
  • Fourier Analysis — breaking complex musical sounds into simple waves

Module 3: Physics of Psychoacoustics & Human Perception

  • Ear & Hearing — ear catches vibrations, brain makes sound
  • Pitch & Loudness — ear identifies shrutis (fine pitch steps), octaves (same note higher/lower), and volume (soft or strong)
  • Masking — one sound hides another
  • Harmony & Dissonance — smooth notes feel pleasant, clashes feel tense
  • Psychological Response — sound changes mood and mind

Module 4: Singing Physics (Human Voice Production)

  • Breathing System — lungs, diaphragm, vocal folds produce voice
  • Resonance — Vocal Tract (throat, mouth & nose) works like a natural amplifier, deciding the “color” of your voice and giving it its unique sound quality
  • Registers — chest voice (lower range, deep), head voice (upper range, light), falsetto (airy, thin), overtone singing (two tones at once)

Module 5: Physics of Acoustic Instruments

  • Strings — sound from vibrating wires (sitar, violin, guitar)
  • Membranes — stretched skins create tone (tabla, mridangam, drums)
  • Air Columns — wind instruments use vibrating air (flute, shehnai, harmonium reeds)
  • Resonance in Instruments — body or cavity amplifies and enriches sound
  • Tone Quality (Timbre) — each instrument’s unique sound color
  • Comparisons — strings vibrate solid wires, membranes vibrate stretched skins, air columns vibrate enclosed air — each giving a distinct way of producing musical sound

Module 6: Physics of Tuning Instruments

  • Intervals — distance between two notes (Sa–Re, Sa–Pa, etc.)
  • Consonance & Dissonance — smooth intervals feel pleasant, clashing ones feel tense
  • Indian Tuning (Shruti System) — 22 shrutis forming micro interval divisions in an octave
  • Western Tuning (Equal Temperament) — octave divided into 12 equal semitones
  • Just Intonation — tuning based on pure whole number ratios for natural harmony
  • Comparisons — Indian shruti system vs Western equal temperament, showing cultural approaches to tuning

Module 7: Physics of Electronic Sound & DAWs for Music

  • Transducers — microphones and loudspeakers convert sound ↔ electrical signals
  • Analog Synthesis — subtractive (remove parts of sound), additive (combine tones), FM (bend frequencies to make new tones)
  • Digital Audio — sampling theorem (sound captured in steps), bit depth (clarity of each step), DAWs (software for recording, editing, mixing)

Module 8: Physics of Musical Architectural Acoustics

  • Reverberation Time — how long sound stays in a hall, measured by the Sabine formula
  • Concert Halls vs Studios — halls need richness and spread, studios need clarity and control
  • Temple Acoustics — ancient temples designed to amplify Om chanting, creating deep resonance

Module 9: Music Therapy Physics

  • Entrainment — rhythm naturally synchronizes brainwaves, heartbeat, and breathing, creating harmony and balance
  • Vibroacoustic Therapy — low frequency vibrations applied to the body for physical healing and relaxation
  • Neurological Sound Processing — music triggers dopamine (pleasure), endorphins (pain relief), and supports neuroplasticity (brain rewiring)

Module 10: Dynamics of Music

  •  Physics of loudness: amplitude, sound pressure levels, and perception
  • Dynamic markings (piano, forte, crescendo, diminuendo) explained through acoustic energy changes
  • Relationship between dynamics and resonance in performance spaces
  • Clinical relevance: safe dynamic ranges for therapeutic sound, avoiding auditory fatigue or overstimulation
